Research Fellow position available for redeployees

We are currently advertising a post-doctoral Research Fellow position to work on Human Factors and Innovative technologies for AI interventions in Ophthalmology - this is available to redeployees only until just before midnight on Thurs 19th March 2021. Many of the most urgent referrals to hospital eye services are for problems in the retina and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) enables us to detect and diagnose these diseases earlier than ever. Under-referral puts individual patients at risk; conversely, over-referral puts pressure on hospital eye services, delaying care for patients that need treatment, and causing distress and inconvenience. This study aims to use new technologies to improve this referral process: 'tele-ophthalmology' in which OCT scans taken by high street optometrists are reviewed by hospital specialists remotely; and interpretation of retinal scans by an Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm. Applications are invited for a Human Factors researcher to identify enablers and barriers to introducing such technologies: changes in clinicians' workflow, patients' confidence in new technologies, etc. The researcher will conduct observational and interview studies in both hospitals and high street optometry practices. Data gathering methods will be adapted to be Covid-safe. Analysis will be primarily qualitative in order to address the key research questions.
The post is available from 1st June 2021, for 18 months in the first instance.
