Brief biography
Aneesha Singh is Associate Professor and researcher of Human-Computer Interaction at the UCL Interaction Centre. She is interested in the design, adoption and use of personal health and wellbeing technologies in everyday contexts. She is working in the research areas of digital health, ubiquitous computing, multisensory feedback and wearable technology. She received her PhD at UCL in Human Computer Interaction and her MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems from University of Sussex. Before that she has previously worked in industry in various roles as a software developer, analyst and project leader, and as a technical journalist.
Research
My research focuses on (physical and mental) health and wellbeing and on improving people's ability to self-manage their health using technology designed to fit in with everyday contexts of daily life, work and play. My research projects focus on diverse conditions such as self-management of physical activity in chronic pain, autism, HIV, and mental health. I am also interested in the exploration of identity through technology and in playful interactions. In my work, I have often focused on vulnerable or marginalised populations and stigmatised conditions. My background combines HCI, artificial intelligence, programming & physical prototyping, and mixed methods research. My work is cross-disciplinary with various contributing disciplines (e.g. technology, design, psychology, behaviour change, business, public health, physiotherapy). I follow a highly collaborative and inter-disciplinary approach to technology design that places end-user participation and evaluation at its core. I think a lot about making technology inclusive and in ethical ways of conducting research with people, especially in sensitive contexts and with heightened vulnerabilities. I think technology can do better and I am passionate about making it so.
My current funded research projects include:
Equity for the Older: Beyond Digital Access (UKRI)
Harnessing Digital Play for Adolescent Wellbeing (Wellcome ISSF)
AT2030
Recent research activities include:
Co-I on EPSRC Early Career Capital Equipment Award (£120,320) to enable exploration of human driver interaction inside and outside of future semi-/fully-autonomous vehicles by procuring an integrated set of physiological monitoring technologies in a car simulator.
Co-I on Partnership Resource Fund Award (£78,937) for Developing an integrated e-sexual health intervention to investigate novel diagnostic interventions for sexual health, such as HIV self-tests and how people engage with them and how they could access NHS online for care.
PI on GetAMoveOn EPSRC Network ThinkPiece Grant (£4,960) on Going beyond motivation! A framework for the design of technology for supporting physical activity where mobility is restricted to further develop a framework for supporting people during rehabilitation through technology, and publish a white paper.
Co-I on UCL Policy Challenge Award for developing a TechSharing Seminar Series: Working practices in digital health in collaboration with leading experts in digital health, to foster knowledge exchange and future collaboration between academics, clinicians, policy-makers and industry professionals working within or at the boundaries of digital health.
I am also Co-I on grants Magic Outfit, Magic Shoes Funded by the Spanish government for designing wearable technology to enhance positive perception of of one's body and body capability in healthy people and across condition with body dismorphia
