Brief biography

My current research focuses on disabiltiy and inclusion globally. I do this through a number of approaches, including:

  • Co-design and development with disabled people and disabled people's organisations
  • Understanding barriers and enablers to disability innovations reaching disabled people globally
  • The creation of tools to encourage the design of inclusive products and the sharing of technical and domain expertise

I am a co-founder and the Academic Director of the Global Disabilty Innovation Hub and my research goals over the next three uyears closely align with those of our flagship £10m project AT2030. I am attempting to answer the following quuestions:

  • How can digital design and distributed manufacture aid disabled people in getting acess to assitive technology?
  • What (new) methods of design can be developed to ensure disabled people in resource poor settings are fully included?
  • What is the role of human-computer interaction in the creation of data sets which enable evidence-based policy to support the inclusion of disabled people in society?
  • How do we create new databases of evidence in low resource settings?
  • How do we better share knowledge which can help disabled people be fully included in society?
  • What is an assitive technoology in the 21st century and how to we value the benefits it brings to disabled people?
  • How do we create disability innovations which become available to disabled people in resource poor settingss?

I am also interested in advancing the state of the art in human-robot interactions and explore this with the collabroatiors withing UCL robotics.
